According to Boston.com, online college enrollment surged in '09 with online courses from U.S. colleges and universities growing almost 1 million students that year, the highest yearly increase on record. With higher unemployment, increased competitiveness in the job market and a need for a convenient and effective learning option, online college enrollment should continue on an upward trend.

Reasons Why Online College Enrollment Surged in '09

The face of the job market transformed in 2009 – there were more layoffs, the job market was flooded with applicants and the required skill level for most jobs increased. How did people compete in such a tight market? The economic downturn prompted many people to return to school.Whether they were laid off, wanted to increase their skills or become more marketable in the current economy, education provided the answer. Online college proved to be the best choice for many busy adults.

Benefits of Online College

Today, the perception is that the benefits of online college often outweigh the advantages of going to a traditional school. Many people seem to agree – a staggering 30 percent of U.S. college students took at least one online class in 2009. With an online education, students are able to enroll in an accredited online college, take a competitive certificate program or degree program and complete their courses on their schedule – all from the convenience of their home computer. They have access to one-on-one support, with the ability to complete their coursework day or night.  Here are even more reasons people choose online college:
Personalized Student Support

A misperception of online college may be that people think that they learn alone when they choose that learning option. However, this is not the case in today's online environment. With their online college enrollment, students gain access to a complete support system. Faculty and staff are available via phone, email and fax. Students can interact with each other through group discussions and white boards. Additionally, many schools employ Skype and other face-to-face options. The idea is that the students are never alone with their online experience, providing an even greater benefit to being an online college student.

Demand for Online Education to Increase

School administrators are listening – Inside Higher Ed reported that when college presidents were asked why they were adding online education, 89 percent said they were striving to meet the increased demand of students.  The flexibility and convenience of an online college education are being recognized nationwide, with many schools tailoring their programs to meet the needs of today's learners.

Online college education has been prevalent for a number of years. However, when online college enrollment surged in '09, schools began to take notice that the need for high-quality, self-paced certificate and online degree programs were on the rise. Today's working adults require an education that is specifically designed for their needs and tailored to their lifestyle. Online college education is here to stay and enrollment should continue to increase in school across the nation.
