Although it has been around for centuries in one form or another, the general studies degree gained popularity in the United States in two separate periods - first at the end of the World War II to accommodate the returning soldiers and then again in the 1980s and 1990s due largely in part to the growing movement toward individualism of that time period. There are a number of advantages and disadvantages for the general studies degree that should be considered before enrolling.

There Are Fewer Requirements for this Degree

One of the biggest pros for the general studies degree is the fact that there are fewer requirements for completion than in other types of programs. Even an associate’s degree has a number of set requirements that must be fulfilled before it is completed.

Fewer Requirements Means More Flexibility

Because there are fewer requirements that need to be fulfilled in the General Studies Degree program, there is the ability to design much of the curriculum for the individual student. Working with a student advisor can allow adult learners to choose the right courses for what they want to learn and how they will learn the best.

General Studies Degrees for the Adult Learner

When adults finally return to college to complete work for a degree, they typically have to start all over. It may have been many years since they were in a classroom of any kind. They may have never taken a single college course in their life at all. The General Studies degree program may be more flexible and comfortable for the adult learner who might be overwhelmed by the other types of college programs. This type of course of study can show adult learners that they are actually able to keep up with the work and may inspire them to complete a more specialized degree program in the future.

The General Studies Degree is Similar to a Bachelors Degree

The General Studies degree gives much the same information as the typical bachelor’s degree without having to fulfill the requirements of a specific discipline or major. For people who are not sure of what educational plan will be most helpful in their career, the general studies degree is a way to increase their employability without sticking them in a course that they are either not suited for or not interested in at all.

A Drawback to the General Studies Degree

While there are a number of benefits, there is a drawback in that it is a more general degree, there may not be enough specific lessons to be of value in certain types of occupations or career fields.

Indeed, many times the general degree is better than the bachelor’s degree, that is more specific; at least, it is more easy to get.
An important part of my friends have the general degree, and everything is OK at their lives…at least, in the working life. In fact, many times the general degree is preferred, because, despite the fewer requirements, gives more, exactly, general studies and information. That shows a wide range of possibilities.
Of course, the same thing can be a problem…But, if you want to study something, but you are not sure about what, the general degree is clearly the better option.
