From the Department of Veterans Affairs to the Department of Education, government leaders, along with the support of the White House, recently detailed plans to provide programs to service members and create specific veteran family support programs over the coming year.

In an effort to support and strengthen military families, leaders from the Department of Defense and other government agencies voiced unanimous approval in January 2011 to create new resources and support programs for military families nationwide.

In fact, the Department of Veterans Affairs joined the White House and federal agencies in support of these new initiatives, with VA officials stepping forward to also voice their approval of these military family-focused efforts. The veteran family support program includes plans to introduce several new programs and cooperative efforts, with the intention to benefit and honor veterans and their families.

Specifically, the U.S. Department of Education expressed its commitment to expand educational opportunities for military spouses and veterans. Additionally, it will focus on developing learning opportunities for military children, as well as strive to simplify the financial aid application process.

Additional veteran family support programs on the horizon include: expanding caregiver support programs, enhancing services to combat suicide, and implementing mental health strategies. Other long-term goals include working with the Housing and Urban Development Department to end homelessness.

The National Institute of Food and Agriculture, under the U.S. Department of Agriculture, will also work with the Defense, Health and Human Services and Education departments to increase child care availability across the nation – another benefit for veterans and military families.

More details about these veteran family support programs and military family initiatives can be found in the White House Report, titled: “Strengthening Our Military Families: Meeting America’s Commitment.

It is so good to see the promise of more help to military families and veterans. I work with homeless veterans, many of whom have experienced family breakups (due at least in part to financial strains) after returning home from tours of duty.
